Bible Basics 101: The Kingdoms of Prophecy

Posted by

In the Bible, there are many prophetic things which are not easy to be comprehended without having a solid understanding of the symbols found in prophecy, and because of this, many books of the Bible have become shrouded in mystery as if they could not be understood at all. In this way, the Scripture is fulfilled which says:

Isa 29:11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:

Isa 29:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

Isa 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
Because of the traditions of men, these books are no more clearly understood than if they had never been given, but it is our privilege to understand them. The Bible is open for our study, and we are told that: 2 Peter 1:20-21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. (21) For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The prophecies aren’t to be privately interpreted. They’ve been given by the Holy Ghost, and therefore, by the Word of God, we can understand the mysterious sayings of the prophecies. Jesus tells us: Proverbs 8:8-9 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. (9) They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
This is especially true with the books of Daniel and Revelation. These prophetic books are wonderfully woven together. And if we understand the book of Daniel, then we’ll have keys to understand the book of Revelation more clearly.

Jesus spoke of the book of Daniel, and told us something very important. He said to understand it:

Mark 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

This prophecy was given, not only for the early Christians, but is the same language used by the book of Daniel to explain prophecies regarding the identity of the Antichrist, and his working in our day. This power is wonderfully at work in the world, and many are left in awe by him, but many don’t know the prophecies, and because of that, they are in darkness. But the prayer of Jesus was for us to know and understand this prophecy. If we will take heed, Jesus will give us light.

In this article, we will look at the prophecies of Daniel 2, Daniel 7, and Daniel 13 to begin laying a foundation for a clearer understanding of prophecy.

A great metal image in Daniel 2 symbolizing the kingdoms of the earth.

A great metal image in Daniel 2 symbolizing the kingdoms of the earth.

In Daniel 2, we see the king of Babylon having a dream foretelling the rise and fall of kingdoms.
A great image is shown in his dream: it is a symbol of the world kingdoms. It was made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, with feet of iron and miry clay.

Daniel the prophet was given the understanding from God to know what these dreams meant. He said to the king of Babylon that his kingdom was that head of gold.

Dan 2:37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

Dan 2:38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
Babylon was known as the city laid in gold. But Babylon’s worldwide dominion didn’t last, just as God, through the prophet, foretold.

Daniel 2:39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

Another came, and still another. Each kingdom in in that same image of sin; it was after the molding of sin, the works of man’s hands, and not made in the image of God.

The next kingdom was MediaPersian kingdom. Then after that, the Grecian kingdom. Then another comes:

Daniel 2:40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

The iron kingdom is none other than the iron monarchy of Rome. Rome was originally a republic, and iron is one of the hardest, and most common metals. It symbolized how Rome fell from being a republic and became a monarchy through the deceitfulness of sin.

“In the train of luxury came vice; self-restraint was broken down; the power of self-government was lost; and the Roman republic failed, as every other republic will fail, when that(self government) fails by virtue of which alone a republic is possible. The Romans ceased to govern themselves, and they had to be governed. They lost the faculty of self-government, and with that vanished the republic, and its place was supplied by an imperial tyranny supported by a military despotism.” – (AT Jones The Two Republics page 3)

Rome is an example of the terrible results that follow when sin happens. The kings began to rule over them, and the religions of the kings became enforced through legislative councils and decrees. Thus we see the Roman kingdom, more commonly called ancient Europe, “breaking in pieces and bruising.” The strong iron metal, not easily being overcome. It was for over 1000 years, a force to be reckoned with.

Lastly, you see the kingdom divided. The iron still exists, but now, we find miry clay.

Daniel 2:41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

We see the people, represented by the clay, but the brutal strength of the iron was still found to be prominent on the world stage. So here we can see the course of history in the world is revealed, but this is only the beginning of the prophetic visions which we will touch on.

In Daniel 7, another vision is given which expands on the first depicting a similar course for the world.

Magnifying the prophecy of Daniel 2, the world kingdoms are shown in greater clarity through beastly powers.

Magnifying the prophecy of Daniel 2, the world kingdoms are shown in greater clarity through beastly powers.

Dan 7:2-3 Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night…

four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.

We don’t have to be uncertain about what prophetic beasts represent in the Bible, because the Bible itself tells us that they represent kings and their kingdoms.

So let’s take a look at these kingdoms and their symbols.
babylon lionThe LION——-

Daniel 7:4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.

The lion is the first one that we are given. If we use Scripture to explain these symbols, we can understand that this kingdom is Babylon.

Jeremiah 4:7 The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
And it’s wings are symbolic of the speed it conquered the kingdoms of the earth with:

Jeremiah 4:13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.

However, the lion has another significance that in prophetic understanding, is important.
ishtar gate lion
When we look at the walls that surrounded Babylon, we see a significant construction that Daniel understood clearly. On the wall dedicated to the Babyonian goddess Ishtar, there were flowers, dragons, and lions with wings. But why were lions with wings on the wall? According to the Babylonian tale, the goddess Ishtar made war while enthroned upon lions. It was a symbol of war, and also of strength.

When he was made to stand upon the feet as a man, the depiction of Babylon’s dominion is given. When Nebuchadnezzar was given the kingdom, he was given a knowledge that the only true God was the One who gave Him the ability to both stand and rule upon his throne. This knowledge was essential for the kings that would follow, and disregarding that knowledge would lead eventually lead to Babylon’s fall.

Daniel 7:5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.

The next kingdom was likened to a bear. It was the Medopersian kingdom which conquered the kingdom of Babylon and became the kingdom to bear rule over the earth. ItPersia- Bear consisted of both the Medes and the Persians, and was fittingly raised up on one side more than the other, due in part to the Persians holding much more power of the two sides. The bear held the ribs in it’s mouth to symbolize the three great territories that it overthrew. Egypt, Lydia, and Babylon.

Just as the religion of Babylon was depicted in the symbolism of the lion with wings, no less is this bear symbolic of the Persian religion.

“The battle between Sol (the Sun) and Mithras results in Mithras overcoming the planetary sun and becoming the Invincible Sun. Sol kneels in front of…[Mithras] while Mithras holds the constellation Bear (Ursa Minor) in one hand. This emphasizes his power as a stellar god, one who moves the cosmic pole as well as causing the precession of equinoxes.”

Now when they (= the seven gods) take their place, here and there, in order, look in the air and you will see lightning-bolts going down, and lights flashing, and the earth shaking, and a god descending, a god immensely great, having a bright appearance, youthful, golden-haired, with a white tunic and a golden crown and trousers, and holding in his right hand a golden shoulder of a young bull: this is the Bear which moves and turns heaven around, moving upward and downward in accordance with the hour. Then you will see lightning-bolts leaping from his eyes and stars from his body.”

In an ancient Mithraic Liturgy, we can read the following:
“I concentrated my attention on the constellation Bear (Ursa Minor) and I observed that it formed seven apertures through which God (Ahura Mazda) was showing himself to me. My God (Ahura Mazda)! I cried, what is this? He said to me: “These are the seven apertures of the Throne.”
Just as the lion was symbolic of the strength of Ishtar, as well as symbolic of her throne, the very same thing is depicted by the constellation bear in the Mithraic religion.

Greece- Leopard
Daniel 7:6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

The next kingdom, just like we saw in Daniel 2, is the kingdom of Greece. Having four wings like a lion, it took the world empire with the greatest speed. Alexander, who is known as the great by many, was great because God delivered the Medes and Persians into his hand.

The leopards were a symbol of the throne of Dionysius, also known as Bacchus. The Greek god of wine and revelry. The leopard, according to Greek legend, tells of faithful women worshippers of the Greek god, who desired to be made wild beasts to devour the enemies of Dionysius; and they were transformed into leopards for their fierce predatory powers.

Oppian, Cynegetica 3. 78 (trans. Mair) (Greek poet C3rd A.D.) :
“Minstrels celebrate this race of beasts [the leopards] as having been aforetime the nurses of Bakkhos, giver of the grape; wherefore even now they greatly exult in wine and receive in their mouths the great gift of Dionysos [wild leopards had a taste for wine]. What matter it was that changed glorious women from the race of mortals into this wild race of Pardales (panthers) I shall hereafter sing.”

Oppian, Cynegetica 4. 230 :Dionysos_mosaic_from_Pella
“Leopards are overcome also by the gifts of Dionysos, when crafty hunters pour for them the crafty drought, shunning not the anger of holy Dionysos. Leopards are now a race of wild beasts, but aforetime they were not fierce wild beasts but bright-eyed women, wine-drinking, carriers of the vine branch, celebrators of the triennial festival, flower-crowned, nurses of frenzied Bakkhos [Dionysos] who rouses the dance [the story of the nursing of Dionysos follows, see The Birth of Dionysos for this section of Oppian] . . .
Late and last he [the adult Dionysos and his followers] set foot in Thebes, and all the daughters of Kadmos came to meet the son of fire. But rash Pentheus bound the hands of Dionysos that should not be bound and threatened with his own murderous hands to rend the god . . . And the heart of the women worshippers was chilled, and they cast on the ground all the garlands from their temples and the holy emblems of their hands, and the cheeks of all the worshippers of Bromios flowed with tears. And straightway they cried: ‘Io! Blessed one, O Dionysos, kindle thou the flaming lightning of thy father and shake the earth and give us speedy vengeance on the evil tyrant. And, O son of fire, make Pentheus a bull upon the hills, make Pentheus of evil name a bull and make us ravenous wild beasts, armed with deadly claws, that, O Dionysos, we may rend him in our mouths.’

The people who honored Dionysius were like him in many respects. Finding their pleasure in intoxication.

The four heads of the leopard symbolize the four divisions of Greece when Alexander, at his death, failed to have a successor. His kingdom was divided to four military generals; Cassander, Lysimachus, Ptolemy, and Seleucid.

dragon fixDaniel 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
This was the Roman empire. The description of the beast was a diverse beast with great iron teeth. The iron teeth are like the legs and feet of iron in the image of the world’s kingdoms in Daniel 2. The description that “it devoured and brakes in pieces” is precisely what the chief deity, Chronus, and his successor Zeus, of the Romans did to maintain their position of power. According to the Roman myth, Chronos was given a prophecy of his overthrow by one of his children. So what he did was devoured his children. When the prophecy came to pass, and Zeus escaped death, he defeated Chronos, and in fear that he would lose his kingdom, continued the Roman god’s legacy of devouring the children to protect his throne.

It was at this time that Christ came to the earth, born of the Holy Ghost, born through Mary.

Revelation 12:3-4 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon…. the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

It was through the Roman kingdom that Satan, also known as the great red dragon, was seeking to devour Jesus. Satan seeks to work out his designs through the kingdoms of the world, and this was especially the case with the One who he sees will overthrow his kingdom. Much like the chief deities of the Romans, Herod learned of the Messiah, heralded to be a great king who was going to rule in Israel, and inspired with the same fear and lust for power that is found in the heart of Satan, he ordered all the children under two years of age to be put to death in Israel. This was how Satan, through the Roman Empire, was ready “to devour the child as soon as he was born.”
Rome divided

It was said that the beast had “ten horns”. Daniel 7:24 “And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise…”

1) Alemanni 2) Anglo-Saxons 3) Franks 4) Burgundians 5) Visigoths 6) Suevi 7) Ostrogoths 8) Heruli 9) Lombards 10) Vandals

Then the prophecy continues:

Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

The little horn came and would uproot and subdue three other horns to become established. Who was this little horn?

little horn
Who is the little horn power that rises up out of the Roman Empire?
Daniel 7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Daniel 7:20-21 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. (21) I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

It said that the little horn would be diverse from the first, and by him, three of the horns would be subdued. This same power would make war with the saints and prevail against them. Then we are given a time. It says he will have this power for “a time, times, and a dividing of time.”

In the book of Revelation, this power that comes from the Roman dragon will continue to persecute God’s children for “1260 days…”, which is called in the same chapter “a time, times, and a half”. In Revelation 11, it is called forty-two months. This power is called the abomination of desolation, which Jesus talked about.

Mar 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,)…

Jesus calls us to understand the prophecies of the book of Daniel especially. This little horn that came out of Rome. But what is that power?

Not only for 1260 days, but another prophecy connects it with 1290 days as well.

Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

The little horn, which was diverse from all the other horns receives it’s power from the Roman Empire.

In the book of Revelation, John saw another vision of that same kingly power:

Revelation 13:1-2 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having …upon his heads the name of blasphemy. (2) And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

John sees the very beasts of the vision of Daniel 7 all mentioned here. And the dragon that sought to devour Jesus, the Roman Empire, gives it’s power to this diverse beast. The same power that is described as the little horn, which made war against the saints. If we look further at the power the Roman kingdom gives to this diverse beast, the bible says:

Revelation 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

The diverse beast, who is the little horn, has power given to him over all kindreds, tongues, and nations for forty two months.

The mouth of the lion shows that this little horn has the very heart of Babylon, speaking great things against God and His children. The feet of the bear show this kingdom walking in the way of the Mithraic sun worship, and devouring it’s adversaries. The body of the leopard signifying the qualities of the god of fermented wine, and turning it’s worshippers into the likeness of cruel beasts. But it is the dragon that gives it power for 1260 days.

In Bible prophecy, days are counted for years.

When Ezekiel was being used by God as a symbol to demonstrate a prophetic truth of Israel’s fallen condition, God’s sign of Ezekiel laying on his side for every day represented a year for each day.

Ezekiel 4:5 For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.

Ezekiel 4:6 And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.

The same is true for time prophecies in the Bible. The little horn coming out of Rome as a fierce persecutor was to be established with power for 1290, as well as 1260 years.

And what the little horn was especially known for? It says “he thinks to change times and laws…”, but these laws can’t refer to man-made laws, because if that were the case, every single beast should have been mentioned, because every kingdom has changed their laws. But this speaks of thinking to change the laws of heaven; speaking blasphemy by claiming the authority to change the law of God, and it was based on that authority that this unique horn had, that it exercised authority over the Christian world.

A Witness to this day of the claims of the Papacy to those three uprooted kingdoms.

A Witness to this day of the claims of the Papacy to those three uprooted kingdoms.

Of the ten horns, three were uprooted from their place by religious conquest. These three kingdoms had observed the law of God that this little horn presumed to have changed. What is this kingdom that the beast holds so many diverse qualities from other pagan religions?

This power can only historically refer to the Papacy.

The Papacy was nothing less than the falling away prophesied by the Apostle Paul. Paul, telling his converts of the day of the coming of Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-7 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; (4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (5) …And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. (7) For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Paul spoke of a restraining influence that needed to be taken out of the way before the falling away could be fully manifested on the world stage. Since the nominal conversion of the emperor Constantine from sun worship to Christianity, he began to hold many ecumenical councils to unite the religion of the pagans with Christians. Paganism was now concealed under the disguise of Christianity. The Babylonian lion, the Persian Bear, the Grecian Leopard… all were incorporated into the faith of Catholic. Christianity.

Twentieth Century Encyclopedia of Catholicism says the following:

The missionary history of the [Catholic] Church clearly shows her adaptability to all races, all continents, all nations. In her liturgy and her art, in her tradition and the forming of her doctrine, naturally enough she includes Jewish elements, but also elements that are of pagan origin. In certain respects, she has copied her organization from that of the Roman Empire, has preserved and made fruitful the philosophical intuitions of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, borrowed from both Barbarians and the Byzantine Roman Empire—but always remains herself, thoroughly digesting all elements drawn from external sources…In her laws, her ceremonies, her festivals and her devotions, she makes use of local customs after purifying them and “baptizing” them.

“It is interesting to note how often our Church has availed herself of practices which were in common use among pagans .. Thus it is true, in a certain sense, that some Catholic rites and ceremonies are a reproduction of those of pagan creeds.” (The Externals of the Catholic Church, Her Government, Ceremonies, Festivals, Sacramentals and Devotions, by John F. Sullivan, p. 156, published by P.J. Kennedy, NY, 1942)
“It has often been charged .. that Catholicism is overlaid with many pagan incrustations. Catholicism is ready to accept that accusation and even to make it her boast .. the great god Pan is not really dead, he is baptized.” (The Story of Catholicism, p. 37) Kennedy, NY, 1942)
“The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holydays and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields; sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church.” (An Essay on The Development of the Christian Doctrine John Henry ‘Cardinal Newman’ p.373)

Can this religion be anything less than blasphemy towards God? But there were those who would not allow the abominations to desolate the church. These needed to be “taken out of the way”, because they had been used by God to restrain the rapid progress of the Papal ascension to power.

These horns, likewise, had to be taken out of the way for the Papacy to be established in it’s place.

Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Clovis, king of France, was the first to have a church/state union for Rome in 508CE.

Clovis, king of France, was the first to have a church/state union for Rome in 508CE.

It was a pagan king named Clovis, king of the Franks, who had a primarily political change of faith urged upon him from his Catholic wife. Christianity constituted a bridge between the Franks and the Roman population, and it was foremost through the bishops of Rome that the falling away from the law of God came into prominence. The church bishops had a lot of power and so Clovis found ways to win their support to his side. Clovis converted to Catholic Christianity. This conversion and his victory over the VISIGOTHS in 508 contributed to establishing the Catholic religion as a state-sponsored church.

Clovis was coronated in 508 being given the title of Augustus, where he embraced and enforced a code of law that would make the Catholic religion. Clovis’ ascension to the throne in 508 brought in its train the first instituted National religion. All other faiths were outlawed. Then began the chain reaction in prophetic history bringing every European nation under the Catholic faith and was led to follow the example of the Franks in using the civil power to enforce the church’s dogmas. For this cause, even to this day, France is called the eldest daughter of the Catholic church. Clovis himself being called the eldest son of the church.

Clovis quickly united the Franks under a large dominion, and subdued those who honored the law of God in disregard for the law and god of the Papacy. “For the first time the diffusion of belief in the nature of the Godhead became the avowed pretext for the invasion of a neighboring territory.” Henry Hart Milman, History of Latin Christianity, p.353

It was on 508AD, that the first conquest in the name of Catholicism concluded, and the Visigoths, who were Sabbathkeeping non-Trinitarians, were defeated and pushed into Spain.

“Thus was the bloody course of Clovis glorified by the Catholic writers, as the triumph of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity over Arianism.” A. T. Jones, The Two Republics, p. 528

The Catholic church had claimed, and still claims, the authority to change the day which God sanctified and blessed, as a sign of His creative power and authority. In the middle of the fourth century, they pressed the Sabbath of Jehovah very low, and exalted the Sunday higher and still higher. This was in definite harmony with the worship days of the Pagans, being the day in which sun worship was by them exalted and immortalized, and which the Trinity found it’s origin with at the Tower of Babel. Both the Trinity and Sunday sacredness were a departure from the true God and His commandments in the days of Noah’s sons, and no less was it adopted by the Papacy, who boastfully embraced the heritage that can be clearly traced back to the apostasy at Babel, and enshrined in sun worship.

The Sabbath, on the other hand, was not introduced as some new institution but has it’s foundation at creation. It is to be remembered and observed as the memorial of the Creator’s work. This is the point that the Papists would not be confronted on. That the very commandment that says we shall “Remember…” has not been merely forgotten, but blatantly changed. But history cannot be changed. Further, they removed the second commandment from the Ten Commandments, and divided the tenth to keep the complete ten commands. And what is the second commandment? It tells us not to make any graven images, and not to bow to them, nor serve them. It’s a practical declaration that we are not the Creator, nor can make anything holy, how much more true with God. With the second commandment, and the call to remembrance of the Creator’s Sabbath, it was to keep the creation in a humble estimation of himself. The Sabbath, pointing to God as the Maker of the heavens and the earth, distinguishes the true God from all false gods. All who keep the seventh day signify by this act that they are worshipers of Jehovah. Thus the Sabbath is the sign of man’s allegiance to God as long as there are any upon the earth to serve Him, but this point in the early church was made a matter of war. The fourth commandment is the only one of all the ten in which are found both the name and the title of the Lawgiver; in it is a declaration of His power and authority, and it being the only one that shows by whose authority the law is given. Thus it contains the seal of God, affixed to His law as evidence of its authenticity and binding force.

Thus the controversy in the early Christian church was made up of two primary classes. Those who worship Jehovah and kept His law, and those who embraced the Trinity and kept the Sun day rather than the Sabbath of God. That Sunday is dedicated to the Trinity is evident in their own claims:

“The feast of the Most Holy Trinity …should make us mindful that actually every Sunday is devoted to the honor of the Most Holy Trinity, that every Sunday is sanctified and consecrated to the triune God. Sunday after Sunday we should recall in a spirit of gratitude the gifts which the Blessed Trinity is bestowing upon us… Sunday, therefore, is the day of the Most Holy Trinity.”
The Church’s Year of Grace, Pius Parsch, 1953

The Sabbathkeeping non-Trinitarian kingdoms had restrained the bishops of Rome from rising to power, until they were to be taken out of the way. The Visigoths becoming conquered and cornered into Spain, the conquests in the name of the Trinity would continue to swallow the entire European continent up into the darkness of Papal apostasy.

Only years later, and another restraining power was removed to make way for the Papacy’s establishment over the kings of the earth. The Vandals, another Sabbathkeeping, non-Trinitarian kingdom, held in check the Papal powers. Yet the Emperor Justinian, of Constantinople, was an heir of the Christianized paganism established through the Emperor Constantine’s manifold ecumenical movements. Justinian’s religious policy reflected the Imperial conviction that the unity of the Empire unconditionally presupposed unity of faith, and it appeared to him obvious that this faith could only be the Trinitarian faith, established from the council of Nicaea. Those of a different belief were subjected to persecution; Justinian became a great aggressor for the Catholic faith, and overtook the Vandals, and issued the Justinian Code. The Justinian Code was a legislative document that declared:

  1. The Emperors Gratian, Valentinian, and Theodosius to the people of the City of Constantinople.

We desire that all peoples subject to Our benign Empire shall live under the same religion that the Divine Peter, the Apostle, gave to the Romans…in accordance with the rules of apostolic discipline and the evangelical doctrine, we should believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit constitute a single Deity, endowed with equal majesty, and united in the Holy Trinity.

(1) We order all those who follow this law to assume the name of Catholic Christians, and considering others as demented and insane, We order that they shall bear the infamy of heresy; and when the Divine vengeance which they merit has been appeased, they shall afterwards be punished in accordance with Our resentment, which we have acquired from the judgment of Heaven…

(2) Let those who do not accept those doctrines cease to apply the name of true religion to their fraudulent belief; and let them be branded with their open crimes, and, having been removed from the threshhold of all churches, be utterly excluded from them, as We forbid all heretics to hold unlawful assemblies within cities. If, however, any seditious outbreak should be attempted, We order them to be driven outside the the walls of the City, with relentless violence, and We direct that all Catholic Churches, throughout the entire world, shall be placed under the control of the orthodox bishops who have embraced the Nicene Creed.

But not all the world was yet conquered for the Catholic church. Besides the Visigoths and Vandals, Justinian subdued another restraining power of non-Trinitarian Sabbathkeepers. The Ostrogoths occupied the very seat of Rome, but through the aggressive Justinian Code, the Ostrogoths were overtaken, uprooted from the land, and hunted like wild beasts. Then the Justinian Code went into full effect by 538AD. Only thirty years from the time Clovis declared the Catholic church the official state religion of the French kingdom. Then was a critical time for prophetic fulfillment.

It was now fulfilled, the saying that the little horn would “rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Daniel 7:24-25

Daniel 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
Daniel 11:38 …in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
The abomination of desolation was established. Nothing to restrain her uncontrolled power, she persecuted God’s people wonderfully. This is how we see the dragon giving it’s seat, power, and great authority to the Papacy.

It’s power was to continue 1290 years according to the prophecy in Daniel 12, from the time of Clovis’ national establishment of Catholicism in 508AD. But it was to continue for 1260 years from the time that Rome itself was taken and given to the Papacy only thirty years later.
By this, we can see perfectly the prophetic reckonings, and the power of the little horn to undermine the people of God and the true faith.

It was estimated that over 50,000,000 martyrs were killed during the dark ages. The Bible was banned in a common language, but God worked on the hearts of faithful men, even in the Catholic church to bring the light of the knowledge of the truth to the people. By this means was the the reformation kindled, and Christ lit a fire that would not be soon quenched. By the Protestant reformation, the sword of the Spirit was committed to the princes of Germany who learned the gospel, and saw in the gospel Christ crucified for them, and He became more precious to them than life, and their very own kingdoms. They boldly said they would obey the voice of conscience rather than Pope and prelate, and strength was given to the reformation. The power of the mystery of iniquity was broken, and the power that so long restrained the Catholic church began to gain strength. Even the princes who did not have the gospel were embolded by the Protestant princes to have liberty of conscience. Therefore at the heart of Protestantism is where the Spirit of God was present, bringing liberty of conscience, even to the Papists, who differed from those protesting for the sake of freedom to worship according to the dictates of their conscience.

Many kings and princes were emboldened to uphold the Protestant reformation, disconnecting themselves from honoring the Papacy by a church/state union. The Bible, through the Protestant reformers, was translated into a common language for the common people, and even in Catholic countries, the flames of revival were felt, and multitudes separated themselves from Catholic communion. The Papists seeing these developments formed a new order at that time: the order of the Jesuits.

These newly summoned new forces, hoping to accomplish the destruction of the Protestant Reformation. It was for this purpose that the order of the Jesuits was created, the most cruel, unscrupulous, and powerful of all the champions of popery. Cut off from every earthly tie and human interest, dead to the claims of natural affection, reason and conscience wholly silenced, they knew no rule, no tie, but that of their order, and no duty but to extend its power. The gospel of Christ had enabled its adherents to meet danger and endure suffering, undismayed by cold, hunger, toil, and poverty, to uphold the banner of truth in face of the rack, the dungeon, and the stake. To combat these forces, Jesuitism inspired its followers with a fanaticism that enabled them to endure like dangers, and to oppose to the power of truth all the weapons of deception. There was no crime too great for them to commit, no deception too base for them to practice, no disguise too difficult for them to assume. Vowed to perpetual poverty and humility, it was their studied aim to secure wealth and power, to be devoted to the overthrow of Protestantism, and the re-establishment of the papal supremacy. jesuit emblemWhen appearing as members of their order, they wore a garb of sanctity, visiting prisons and hospitals, ministering GC88 234.3 to the sick and the poor, professing to have renounced the world, and bearing the sacred name of Jesus, who went about doing good. But under this blameless exterior the most criminal and deadly purposes were concealed. It was a fundamental principle of the order that the end justifies the means. By this code, lying, theft, perjury, assassination, were not only pardonable but commendable, when they served the interests of the church. Under various disguises the Jesuits worked their way into offices of State, climbing up to be the counselors of kings, and shaping the policy of nations. They became servants, to act as spies upon their masters. They established colleges for the sons of princes and nobles, and schools for the common people; and the children of Protestant parents were drawn into an observance of popish rites. All the outward pomp and display of the Romish worship was brought to bear to confuse the mind, and dazzle and captivate the imagination; and thus the liberty for which the fathers had toiled and bled was betrayed by the sons. The Jesuits rapidly spread themselves over Europe, and wherever they went, there followed a revival of popery. GC88 234.3

However, their careless manner had left them open to resistance, and for this cause, Pope Clement XIV dissolved the order. But to dissolve the order, was to dissolve their mission, and the Jesuits would not be deterred from their mission. Therefore they established newly disguised societies across Europe to carry their mission forward. The Pope, aware of their hardened mentality knew the Jesuits, and knew the deed which he had done would mean his death. Now the Catholic church suffered greatly, having it’s Jesuit militia legally disbanded in the Catholic church. With this development, added to the heart-changing power of the gospel, judgment on the Catholic church was now ripe:

When we look at the prophecies foretelling the 1260 and 1290 year periods, what marks their end? It brings us to 1798AD. It was through France, the eldest daughter of the church, that General Berthier fulfilled the orders from a new form of French government called The Directory, to bring the Papacy into captivity and Rome was separated from having Catholicism as it’s state religion, and Europe freed itself from the power exercised by the Papacy.

So impressive was the significance of this deadly wound, that the oppressive tyranny exercised by the Papacy was now to come back upon it’s head. Peter, who had thought to protect Christ as He was being taken to be crucified, had with his sword cut off Malchus’ ear. Yet Christ restored the ear of Malchus, and told Peter that those who live by the sword would die by it also. And that principle holds true today. “By what judgment you measure, it shall be measured to you again…” said Christ. In the prophecy foretelling the deadly wound, in verse 10 of the thirteenth chapter of Revelation, it speaks of what would happen to the Papacy for exercising the power of the sword of the state. Now was fulfilled the saying:

Revelation 13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
The crowning act of this wounding was a coronation ceremony held in honor of Napoleon, the emperor of France. It was customary to have a wonderfully ornate ceremony to honor the crowning of Catholic kings; this was done in the presence of the bishop of Rome, and it was given to the Pope to crown the kings, symbolic of how the Papacy reigned over the kings of the earth. Now Napoleon, having held the Pope captive, demanded the Pope’s presence for his crowning ceremony, to have all the pomp and pageant of the coronation ceremonies of Catholic kings. But there was one difference, and greatly significant. Napoleon, in the presence of the Roman pontiff, crowned himself king, and not the Pope. And this sign spread throughout the land, and it was made known that the oppressive power of the Papal tyranny had ceased.
A judgment was made in favor of the saints, who held fast to God’s commandments and to the power of God.
